Discussion:
decimal alignment with asterisk

I am trying to create a decimal aligned table of number, where some of
the numbers are follwed by an asterisk (*) to denote statistical
significance.

When I add the asterisk to the decimal aligned column, it destroys the
decimal alignment.

e.g.

1.0
10.1
4.4*

any suggestions?

I can't reproduce the problem you're describing. Adding an asterisk doesn't
prevent the decimal tab from working properly (tested in Word 2010).

However, since it isn't working for you, do the following as a simple
workaround: Create an additional, narrow column (clear the left border on the
column) for the asterisks.

Are you actually using a decimal tab stop or a right-aligned tab stop? The
latter will show the effect you describe, but a decimal tab stop will align
on the first non-numeric character (other than the thousands separator) in a
numeric sequence. This allows you to align numbers with asterisks,
parentheses, and other such characters following, even if the numbers do not
contain decimal points; they align where the decimal point would be if there
were one.

I am trying to align decimals (some with leading numbers, some without; some with asterisks, some without). As I understand all of the "tips" I read, if I 1) make sure I'm aligned left, 2) select the column, 3) click the tab options (far left of ruler) until I get the decimal alignment tab, and 4) click on the ruler within the column where I want the decimal to align, then all numbers will align. But they don't. They only align when I add a zero in front of the numbers without leading number. But I'm working with statistics, and I cannot add the zero. I'm at deadline and I'm desperate. Help!

I want to add that it works for columns in which the numbers are similar (i.e., no leading number or no minus signs).

Hi,

I am trying to align decimals (some with leading numbers, some without;
some with asterisks, some without).
which version of Word do you use?
Please, give us some entries. For example, following values are aligned
correctly:

12,369
,3612313131
*3,36
15,1234*

Sorry... I've been so busy with the other "fires" on this deadline, I forgot to check. We have "faked" it with spacing, but I don't care for that option, if I can find out how to really make it work.

Here are two columns of numbers that I can't get to align.

3.72
.16

1.90
.13
.04

and

-1.14
.13

-3.50
.09
.06

I have two more columns of approximately similar numbers. All of the other columns, even though they have asterisks attached to the numbers, are .## format, and they aligned just as expected. I look forward to your assistance!

You are using an English Office version. You are using the English Decimal
symbol. No problem here.
But you can send me a sample document.
