In the first cell of the column, use Insert > Field, select the Seq
field, and put some letter or name after the SEQ in the Field Codes
box in the upper right of the dialog (it doesn't really matter what it
is, as long as there is one). Click OK. The number 1 (which is the
result of the field) appears in the first cell.
Now select the cell and copy to the clipboard. Move the cursor above
the top of the column, so the cursor is a down-pointing black arrow,
and click to select the whole column (but not the whole table). Paste
from the clipboard, which pastes the field into all the cells of the
column. While they're all still selected, press F9 to update the
fields, which will show sequential numbers (hence the field name Seq).
