I have found Phil's solution completely effective in MS Word 2010, where I had also experienced terrible problems. But I should add that when I selected the second table I had to do it by pressing SHIFT and CTRL and scrolling down, making sure not to overrun the last cells. If I used the SELECT TABLE option from the Word menu, the resulting merger of the tables was a mess, with the columns not aligned.
I have two tables (one above the other) with an identical number of columns.
Is there a way (in Word 2007) to combine these two different tables into one
table?
Delete the paragraph mark between them.
I followed your suggestion but they are still two tables. If you click on
table icon it only moves one of the tables

Select your two tables, go to tables Layout contextual tab, in the table
group click Properties button, set the text wrapping to none, now try do
delete the paragraph marker.

That doesn't work if Word has decided to split a table in two (or three) just
because you tried to reorder the rows in it. There is no paragraph mark to
delete. You're just left with a non-functioning table - every time you
change a column width for instance you have to change it separately for each
new "portion" of the table, and header rows do not repeat on pages etc.
Of all the moronic new behaviours that have been inexplicably added to
Office 2007, which don't make sense and weren't asked for, this is by far the
worst. I will be going back to Office 2003 as soon as I dig out my CD.
Office 2007 has more bugs than a turmite mound.

After struggling with this for about an hour, I finally saved the document in Word 2003 format so I could open it up on another computer in '03 to combine the tables. When I opened in '03, they were joined already. So, I took the original and tried to just save in '03 format, close, and reopened, and they were joined... You can then resave in 2007 if you want, but unless you need the 2007 goodies, I don't see much point. See if that helps you too...
I absolutely agree with MikeMay. This is just one of the many moronic
features or non-features of Word 2007. I work in a tech writing environment
where working with tables and graphics is a must. Our office just recently
transitioned to word 2007. Revising word 2003 or older documents with word
2007 is pure hell! Do the MS word designers even know what they are doing?
To paraphrase, it is like inventing a square wheel.

Hi, I know this is a bit late to be replying but I am sure many people like myself have visited this post many times since it was first posted.
1. In the preceding table add an additional row to the bottom of the table. You can do this by simply clicking the outside of the last row of the table and hitting <enter>.
2.Next select all the rows in the following table (the table you want to merge) and drag and drop them into the last row you just created in the first table.

Joining the tables and then saving as 2003 doc worked. Then I opened the 2003 doc and saved it as a 2007. Wow.....it works but is dumb...

If you set the Text Wrapping for the tables to "None," merging the tables
should work fine in either version (no matter which file format you use).

Also, note that merging will be easier if you display nonprinting marks
(using the ¶ button on the Home tab). Then you can see and delete the
relevant paragraph marks (¶) separating the tables that you want to merge.
